Youngstown StateUniversity (YSU) is a public research university located inYoungstown, Ohio. Established in 1908, YSU has been providing qualityeducation to students for over 100 years. This year, the universityheld its annual commencement ceremony where more than 1,200 graduatesreceived their diplomas.
The ceremony washeld on May 8, 2021, at Stambaugh Stadium which was filled withgraduates, families, and friends. Due to the ongoing COVID-19pandemic, the ceremony was held following all safety guidelines,including mandatory masks and social distancing measures.
YSU President JimTressel presided over the ceremony and gave a moving speech,congratulating the graduates on their achievements and reminding themof their responsibility to give back to society. He also reiteratedthe importance of education and how it opens doors to opportunitiesthat can change lives.
One of thehighlights of the ceremony was the keynote address given by Dr. TomásD. Morales, president of California State University, San Bernardino.In his speech, he urged graduates to be resilient, adaptable, andinspired leaders in their respective fields.
The ceremony wasalso attended by a number of dignitaries, including Senator SherrodBrown, Youngstown Mayor Tito Brown, and Ohio Board of Regents member,Vinny Gupta. They congratulated the graduates and encouraged them tocontinue to work hard, be innovative, and strive for excellence intheir careers.
The graduates camefrom various fields of study, including business, engineering,nursing, education, and many others. Among them was Rachel Marconi,who received her Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering. Sheexpressed her gratitude to the faculty at YSU for providing her withexcellent instruction and support throughout her academic journey.
Another graduate,Sarah Michaels, received her Bachelor's degree in Nursing. She talkedabout the challenges she faced during the pandemic and how hereducation prepared her to make a positive impact in the medicalfield.
The ceremonyconcluded with the presentation of diplomas to all the graduates,marking the end of their academic journey at YSU. It was a moment ofmixed emotions, as graduates celebrated their accomplishments, yet atthe same time bid farewell to their alma mater.
