12thAsia-Pacific Intercollegiate Mathematical Contest for Modeling HeldSuccessfully
The12th Asia-Pacific Intercollegiate Mathematical Contest for Modeling(APIMCM) was successfully held from November 6th to November 8th in2020, with over 7,000 participants from 871 colleges and universitiesacross 71 countries and regions around the world.
TheAPIMCM, initiated by the Chinese Mathematical Society in 2009, is aninternational mathematical modeling contest designed to provide aplatform for college students to showcase their mathematical modelingskills. The contest aims to promote communication and cooperationamong students of different countries and regions and enhance theirmathematical modeling ability.
Dueto the COVID-19 pandemic, the contest was held online this year.Participants formed teams of three and were given 96 hours tocomplete their mathematical modeling projects. The contest questionsconsisted of two parts: the modeling problem and the programmingproblem. The modeling problem required students to use mathematicalmethods to analyze and explore a given issue, while the programmingproblem tested students' programming skills and their ability tocompile, debug, and analyze programs.
Thisyear's modeling problem focused on the optimization of the urbanpublic bike-sharing system. The programming problem was centered onusing machine learning models to estimate the number of confirmedCOVID-19 cases in a given area.
Afterthree days of intense competition, the Organizing Committee announcedthe results. The gold medal was awarded to 118 teams, and the silvermedal was awarded to 218 teams. The bronze medal was given to 327teams, and the honorable mention was given to 368 teams.
Thisyear, three students from Chulalongkorn University in Thailand wereawarded the Best Contribution Award for their outstanding performanceand contribution to the contest. They have shown exceptionalprofessional knowledge, outstanding logical thinking, and richpractical skills, setting a good example for other contestants.
"TheAPIMCM provides a good communication platform for mathematics andmodeling enthusiasts. It is a very meaningful and excitingcompetition that encourages students to further study mathematics. Ihope more and more students will join the contest in the future,"said one of the contestants.
Thesuccessful completion of the 12th APIMCM marks a significant stepforward for the internationalization of mathematical modelingcompetitions, further promoting the development of mathematicalmodeling education and research. It provides a platform for studentsfrom different regions and countries to share academic ideas andcultivate innovative thinking. The APIMCM has become a significantevent in the mathematical modeling community and is a greatopportunity for students to showcase their skills and learn fromtheir peers.
